Shopping for a new girlfriend?

by Thomas Sim, 23 Jan, 2001

Adrenaline rushing, palm sweating coupled with palpitation and tachycardia. These are typical symptoms of sympathetic overdrive. If you are too old for this, it might give you a myocardial infarction - heart attack. To think about it, it's a simple thing - you are just shopping for a new girlfriend.

The mentality of a man - especially good-looking man, finding a new girlfriend is synonymous with 'shopping' for one. For them, they come pretty easily. It is like trying to own something yet not quite sure of what it really is. That is the fun, isn't it? He is probably confused by his testosterone.

There is very thin line between shopping and buying. Shopping can mean trying out without yet buying it. This is what most parents are afraid of in any man who is going out with their daughter. The shopping attitude is the one that is debatable, and enemy to most women.

People make mistake shopping for things that wouldn't fit them well. The reasons are many. Over expectation is the most damaging. Have you ever shopped for a pair of shoes that you think will fit your expectation of size and elegance but wouldn't fit your feet? Or, have you shopped and bought a skirt that is trendy but wouldn't fit your shape? Or you rather buy a new car to suit your expected status than doing some serious thinking about your ability and status?

But what the hack? You shop for me, I shop for you! That is why shopping is so fun and so irresponsible. Worse, if bought but not worn, just keep it in the locker. How nice if relationship is so robust! You cannot resort to divorce every time you have differences in opinion.

I remembered a story told to the audience during a wedding reception. It is about buying a new car and taking care of it. When we get a new car, we test drive it and try all tricks to fulfil our dream to the limits. To some, they may drive it still but keep it in the garage most of the time, well covered. Then, there is maintenance, servicing and change of parts or even overhaul. What ever it may be, as time passes by, the new car becomes old and the driver may change his opinion about it. Some will start test-driving or even change car but some still keep old car because of sentimental value. Majority cannot change due to monetary reason. To change to another new car is a dream of every testosterone driven man. That is the problem.

Most people agree that old things come on handy most of the time. I believe that some old things seem to understand their owner. For example, our old watches or shoes. They seem to understand the comfort of our hand and feet. You wear them like they are part of you.

The feeling of a strong buy might contrast the poor market sentiment. This resembles speculator's death-trap in stock market. This is the damage. The buyer made a mistake by buying according to feeling but not sense. And that is the problem of a testosterone man.

If you believe in 'love at first sight', just try to hold on to your expectation and imagination forever, you may live happier doing just that. On the other hand, if you fail to uphold the imagination, beware of the damage.
