Assignment 3 Q
Deadline: 30 July, 2010
Assignment 3: Research Objectives, Problem Statement, Scope and Expected Research Outcomes
You have completed Assignment 1 and you have selected your research area. In Assignment 1, you have given an introduction of your research area and described the research questions that your research project will address.
Think about the objectives of your research. Why do you want to embark on this research? What motivates you to take it up? Why is it important? What happens if this research is not done? The title of this section is Research Objectives. It should not be more than two pages long.
Now, try to describe the problem that your research project will try to solve. I f you have touched this briefly in the first assignment, try to elaborate further. When you have done this, that means you have completed your ‘Problem Statement’. This should be not more than one page long.
When you have completed that, I want you to describe exactly what will be covered and not covered in your research project. While you are trying to do this, you are actually trying to define the Scope of your research project. This should not exceed more than one page. Some researchers refer to this section as the Scope and Limitations.
Finally, think about the deliverables/s of your project. At the end of the research work, what will you end up with. Are you going to produce a new algorithm? A new system? A new prototype? A new framework? Anew set of guidelines? A new theory? A list of recommendations? You can describe this in relation to your Research objectives. For example; If you have completed Research Objective I, what s the output. When you achieve Research Objective II, what is your deliverable? And so on…. Again, this section is approximately one page long. The title of this section is Expected Research Outcomes.
So now, you really need to put on your thinking cap. I know, you would like to talk to me. Feel free to call me or sms at 012-3396186 or email if you have any doubts.
