The story below is not real, however I thought it could bring out the scenario commonly seen in agency cost and double standard of practice in big organizations.
Daddy said: Children, I want you all to do well in your examinations, so from now on, no more IPad, IPhone, or TV! Until you can finish all your studies, nobody can watch or play Internet games!
Child Aaron said: No problem, I can finish studies very fast, so I get to play...
Child Brian said: Me too, I am very smart, see my name "Brain", not "Brian"!
Child Charlie said: You all can, you think I cannot? Mum will help me!
Child Donald said: I will not play, I am good kid! You all bad!
Child Everlyn laughed: Boys! This is only for boys, I am a girl, and I am not yet schooling, where got studies?
Child Gertrude seemed blank: She was just a baby so she did not know what was going on.
The mother stood by the side, arms crossed: Kids! Listen to your daddy, I am not going to have any exception!
Soon, different kids have different speeds and variable amount of studies therefore, some finishes earlier and some later. But, when Aaron finishes Brian also claims he too has finished! Although his was a very shady work. Then again, who is to say he is no genius?
Before they could ask for the iPad, iPhone or TV, little Gertrude already playing with one with her saliva all over the screen. Why? Because Daddy and Mummy were busy cooking up dinner and had no time entertaining her. So, the father gave in to her. She was just a baby, right?
Brian and Aaron screamed! "Daddy! Little baby is swallowing your iPhone!"
Everlyn came for the rescue, "No, Daddy! She is just spitting on your iPhone!"
Then, Mum said in her high pitch tone to Daddy: "You want me to cook dinner or not?"
"Why so difficult? Just go eat outside!" Daddy screamed! He was moments away from going crazy!
So, the whole family packed and went out.
On the dinner table, children were unrest, Gertrude kept throwing the spoon! She liked the sound of spoon falling on the ground. Everlyn was near crying as Mum kept asking her to pick up the spoons!
The 4 monkeys could not settle down, so finally Daddy said: "Ok, if you all behave, I will give you iPad, iPhone and TV when we go back!"
From then, the dinner was completed in peace. They went back, and everyone was happy with their toys. They went to bed with smiling faces, and said: "Daddy, we love you!"
Deep in their heart, they loved their freedom!
Reflection
Nobody likes to be told. Everyone has a resistance inside. That is pretty inborn.
Putting restriction or limitation is an art. By force, it would be temporary, and not sustainable. Thus, the only way is to dynamically change that limitation to suit the environment. However, step wise unleashing the restriction would be better accepted by all. A plan has to be carried out in a progressive manner, each step at a time. The essence is in the journey, not the end.
